THE RANKS OF DISCIPLESHIP

1Chronicles 11:10-25; “…Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the army of the Philistines encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. And David said w ith longing, “Oh, that someone would give me a drink of water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!” So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David… Therefore he would not drink it. These things were done by the three mighty men…Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of another three. He had lifted up his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name among these three. Of the three he was more honored than the other two men. Therefore he became their captain. However he did not attain to the first three…These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and won a name among three mighty men. Indeed he was more honored than the thirty, but he did not attain to the first three…”

Among the mighty men of David, the bible ranks the best, the first three who risked their lives for the sake of their leader, David. Others, like those Abishai or Benaiah, were mighty as well and had done incredible things at the battle field but only the first three mighty men had invaded the camp of their enemy, philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate. This and only this qualifies them to be the best of all the mighty men of David.

David had three ranks of the three mighty men, the first three were the best among the appreciated mighty men of David.

Throughout the history of the bible, we see that among the many there would always be the chosen ones with specific assignments and special trust from their master. There are different ranks of discipleship.

Jesus, of the 70disciples and of the 12disciples, He took only Peter, James and John with Him at the mountain of transfiguration and God showed and told them the things others have never seen or heard. Moses at the Mount Sinai, he took only Joshua with him, to mention few examples.

There are various ranks of the disciples; a crowd of disciples, the most considered disciples and among the considered, the counted special disciples. At what rank are you?

There is always a cost to being counted among the special disciples and a special assignment is always reserved to those ones.

In the discipleship, let you never be contented with just being part of the disciples but strive to be among the counted special disciples. Come out of the crowd of disciples and distinguish yourself among others by getting closer to your Master, Jesus Christ.
